Design Solution: Fireplace Renovation

Built-In Entertainment CenterA home remodel is a great time to think about your house’s design. Do the rooms work for you? What elements can you change to better suit your lifestyle? Repurposing a room is certainly one option to consider, but sometimes the area just needs to be updated with something like a fireplace renovation.

From Fireplace to Built-In Entertainment Center

In some cases (like our Los Gatos home remodel), removing the fireplace to create more space is a good option. In other instances replacing it is an even better option. Our Saratoga remodeling project is a fantastic example of a fireplace renovation that turned into a built-in entertainment center. This is one design change that made the room a better fit for the homeowners. (more…)

Kitchen Remodeling: Creating Storage Space with a Kitchen Bench

Kitchen Bench w/ Storage Underneath

Kitchen Bench w/ Storage Underneath

A kitchen remodeling project is a fantastic time to create more storage space in what can be a somewhat small room. Although expanding the area is sometimes an option, more frequently you are stuck with the square footage you have. So where can you find a little room to hide a few items? As in our Saratoga kitchen design, creating kitchen bench storage by adding built-in seating where you intend to put the table can be a great option.

Creating Kitchen Bench Storage

Creating storage space during a kitchen remodeling project is a natural time to make the change. Although you can certainly buy a kitchen bench, allowing your contractor to create one that is built in and fits with the overall kitchen design will increase value to your home in addition to fitting seamlessly into the space. Kitchen Pantry Remodeling Tips

Decorative Pantry DoorThe kitchen pantry is known for practicality. Pantries are where you stash non-perishable food, from flour and sugar to cans and munchies. But functionality isn’t the only consideration to make when remodeling the kitchen pantry in your home. Take a cue from our Los Gatos kitchen remodeling project and go for style in addition to practicality.

Creating Custom Pantries

How did our Los Gatos clients add their sense of style to their new kitchen pantry? One big change they made is a decorative door. Instead of using a typical wood door like so many other pantries, they picked out a giant grain design on an opaque window. The glass on the door helps the room feel more open and the design fits naturally with one thing kitchens are known for – food. Feel free to check out Simpson and Trustile Doors for more examples of possible decorative doors for your kitchen pantry. (more…)

Kitchen Appliances: Updating Ovens, Dishwashers and More

Los Gatos Kitchen Remodel - Bosch Induction Cooktop

Bosch Induction Cooktop

Updating the appliances in your kitchen is a great way to make the room more functional in addition to increasing value of the home as a whole. We’ve highlighted Sub-Zero refrigerators and Wolf cooktops before, but what else does CAGE Design Build recommend? From dishwashers and cooktops to hoods and ovens, here are a few appliances we recently added to our Los Gatos kitchen remodel.

Bosch Dishwashers

Although washing dishes by hand is always an option, most homeowners prefer the convenience of a dishwasher in their kitchen. Bosch’s dishwashers are known as the quietest brand in North America, in addition to being extremely water and energy efficient. Their custom panel designs can even be created to match your kitchen cabinets so the appliance blends into the surrounding cabinetry. (more…)

Kitchen Design: More Saratoga Updates!

Saratoga Kitchen DesignA couple of weeks ago we shared that phase 2 of our Saratoga remodeling project is complete. Although we highlighted a couple of things we did, we didn’t have time to share much about the kitchen design.

Saratoga Kitchen Design

As with many of our kitchen design projects, the Saratoga project included updating the kitchen cabinets, granite countertops, paint colors, faucets and much, much more. Here are a few specifics from the Saratoga kitchen design:

  • Granite Countertops. For this project, the homeowners selected honed granite countertops because of the soft, natural appearance. They’re also very durable, a great way to add value to your home and the matte finish ended up looking fantastic with the kitchen cabinets. (more…)

The Kitchen Backsplash: Common Trends & Materials

Tile Backsplash

Tile Backsplash

The kitchen backsplash is an easy way to add some personal style into your home along with a functional purpose. You can pick something simple but elegant (as in our Los Gatos project, photo to the right) or a design that’s more ornate and vibrant. How do you pick the backsplash that’s right for your overall kitchen design?

Kitchen Backsplash Trends

As we shared in a post earlier this year, subway tile is a popular backsplash trend right now. It fits into almost any kitchen design well, and the color white can make the room classic and timeless for decades. Other popular trends right now include using stainless steel, tile mosaics and more. (more…)

Kitchen Sinks: Pros and Cons to the Farmhouse Sink

Farmhouse Sink Closeup

Farmhouse Sink Closeup

When it comes to a remodel, some people spend a lot of time thinking about kitchen sinks and some don’t. How particular you are about your kitchen sink generally has to do with what you often use it for. Are you a foodie who loves to cook? Do you care more about the style of the sink or how easy it is to clean?

The Farmhouse Sink

We recently installed a farmhouse sink (also known as apron sinks) in our Saratoga remodeling project (photo to the right). A popular choice for many homeowners right now, these kitchen sinks are known for a deeper bowl that protrudes from the surrounding countertop and cabinets. It is a fantastic option for those that want a little bit more space in their sink and that like the old-fashion look it provides. (more…)

Corner Kitchen Cabinet Solution: Easy Access Hinges

Upper Kitchen Cabinet Corner Hinges

Upper Kitchen Cabinet Corner Hinges

Several weeks ago we suggested adding a Lazy Susan during your kitchen remodel to use corner cabinet space effectively. But you still need to have enough room to get into the space. What do we recommend? Why not try adding easy access hinges on the door of the cabinet?

Easy Access Corner Cabinet Hinges

As you can see in the photo to the right (from our Los Gatos remodeling project), adding easy access hinges to a corner cabinet is a fantastic way to allow you to use the space effectively. For lower cabinets, a Lazy Susan still lets you grab what you need to without finding yourself on the floor, and for upper cabinets the wider door space allows you to use all the space so no area is wasted or out of reach. Kitchen Remodel Tip: Making the Most of Small Spaces

Utilizing Island Storage Space

Utilizing Island Storage Space

Are you trying to make the most of the area you have during your kitchen remodel? Here’s a tip from our recent Los Gatos remodeling project: use the small spaces as efficiently as possible.

Making the Most of Small Spaces

There are a lot of ways to use the small spaces in your kitchen remodel. In the Los Gatos project, for example, we made sure we kept the island’s plumbing tight so it would fit in a cabinet under the sink (see the photo to the right). We also made sure we optimized the island’s storage by installing cabinets the homeowners could easily access. (more…)
