Design Solution: Fireplace Renovation

Built-In Entertainment CenterA home remodel is a great time to think about your house’s design. Do the rooms work for you? What elements can you change to better suit your lifestyle? Repurposing a room is certainly one option to consider, but sometimes the area just needs to be updated with something like a fireplace renovation.

From Fireplace to Built-In Entertainment Center

In some cases (like our Los Gatos home remodel), removing the fireplace to create more space is a good option. In other instances replacing it is an even better option. Our Saratoga remodeling project is a fantastic example of a fireplace renovation that turned into a built-in entertainment center. This is one design change that made the room a better fit for the homeowners. (more…)

Kitchen Design: More Saratoga Updates!

Saratoga Kitchen DesignA couple of weeks ago we shared that phase 2 of our Saratoga remodeling project is complete. Although we highlighted a couple of things we did, we didn’t have time to share much about the kitchen design.

Saratoga Kitchen Design

As with many of our kitchen design projects, the Saratoga project included updating the kitchen cabinets, granite countertops, paint colors, faucets and much, much more. Here are a few specifics from the Saratoga kitchen design:

  • Granite Countertops. For this project, the homeowners selected honed granite countertops because of the soft, natural appearance. They’re also very durable, a great way to add value to your home and the matte finish ended up looking fantastic with the kitchen cabinets. (more…)

Save Kitchen Space with a Hafele Toe Kick Ladder

Hafele Toe Kick Ladder Partially Open

Hafele Toe Kick Ladder Partially Open

When you take on a remodeling project, there are lots of big and little things to think about. One very important thing for many homeowners is saving space. There are many ways to save space, but one very simple way to do it is to install a Hafele toe kick ladder.

What is a toe kick ladder?

A toe kick ladder is a stepstool that folds to only 4 inches thick. Because it takes up minimal space, it can be installed in a base toe kick (the space under your counters) or hung on a cabinet side panel with a bracket. Hafele’s Stepfix toe kick ladders also lock in the open position for safety. They’re made of epoxy-coated steel, available in White/Grey and a Silver/Black finish. They also feature non-slip rubber treads and plastic foot caps. (more…)

Vaulted Ceiling with Skylights

Vaulted Ceiling with Skylights

Have you ever considered a vaulted ceiling for your home? Vaulted ceilings have historically been a sign of wealth and luxury. According to, “The vaulted ceiling has had its major ups and downs in terms of the love or hatred directed at it by homeowners, builders, architects, and designers. Sometimes known as a cathedral ceiling, one of its major pitfalls that it is a notorious energy-waster. On the good side, these types of ceilings look good and provide a lot of light inside a house.” Not only can they make a room feel more luxurious, vaulted ceilings can also make a room feel more open and spacious as you can see in our recent Saratoga remodeling project. If you’re like most homeowners, a major benefit to a remodel is the ability to incorporate space saving methods into your home. From baths and kitchens to bedrooms and laundry rooms, we love working with clients to create the perfect balance of design and efficiency. Project Spotlight: Designing a San Jose Dream Home

San Jose Remodel Original Floor PlanEver hear the saying, “Begin with the end in mind?” At C.A.G.E. Design Build, that’s how we work. Once we know our client’s wish list for their home remodel, we adapt the remodeling project to capture what they need, often without changing the footprint of the home at all.

In one recent San Jose remodeling project, the client wanted a space to cook for and entertain lots of family. The house was disjointed in terms of flow, and the client wanted a lot of seating areas, places to gather, and to eliminate the feelings of isolation in various rooms. The usual wishes for more storage space, including wine storage and areas for personal belongings were also high on the list. And while they were at it, why not update the appliances and add a convenient coffee area? (more…)

How to Repurpose a Room During a Home Remodel

Saratoga Remodeling Plans - BeforeAre the needs of your family slightly different than your home’s layout? Right now we’re working on a remodel in Saratoga for a client with this problem: They didn’t have need for a fourth bedroom, and instead opted for a much larger walk-in closet, a bigger master bath and a spacious laundry room.

A big perk to working with a design-build firm is the benefit of their designer and builder working together to create a floor plan that is well suited for your family’s needs. If they can borrow or eliminate space during a bathroom remodel or other project, and it makes sense for the overall floor to a home, why not?
