Project Spotlight: Designing a San Jose Dream Home

February 1, 2012

San Jose Remodel Original Floor PlanEver hear the saying, “Begin with the end in mind?” At C.A.G.E. Design Build, that’s how we work. Once we know our client’s wish list for their home remodel, we adapt the remodeling project to capture what they need, often without changing the footprint of the home at all.

In one recent San Jose remodeling project, the client wanted a space to cook for and entertain lots of family. The house was disjointed in terms of flow, and the client wanted a lot of seating areas, places to gather, and to eliminate the feelings of isolation in various rooms. The usual wishes for more storage space, including wine storage and areas for personal belongings were also high on the list. And while they were at it, why not update the appliances and add a convenient coffee area?

San Jose Remodel Original Floor PlanAs a design build company, we also saw drawbacks in the San Jose home that were easy to address in the overall design. For example, in addition to the necessary facelifts and modernizing touches, we saw that the kitchen—often the hub of activity in any home—was dark and difficult to access, with obstructive walls and doors. We installed a Solatube for extra lighting, and used the usually dead space under the stairs as a home for the wine collection. By rearranging the walls, the kitchen became accessible like a kind of hub, with two comfy entertainment and seating areas branching out from it.

During the San Jose remodeling project, we also observed the original hallway was reminiscent of a bowling alley—long and skinny from the front of the house to the back. We were able to capture some of this hallway space for the pantry and coat storage, without sacrificing aesthetics and flow. Another touch to improve the general sense of cohesiveness throughout the home was to match all the rooms’ flooring. It’s aesthetic touches like these that a design build firm like C.A.G.E. can help you incorporate.

We love helping clients transform their houses into dream homes. How can we help you with your remodeling project? Give us a call to find out, and stay tuned for photos of the completed San Jose remodeling project!
