Kitchen Remodel Tip: Making the Most of Small Spaces

Are you trying to make the most of the area you have during your kitchen remodel? Here’s a tip from our recent Los Gatos remodeling project: use the small spaces as efficiently as possible.

Making the Most of Small Spaces

There are a lot of ways to use the small spaces in your kitchen remodel. In the Los Gatos project, for example, we made sure we kept the island’s plumbing tight so it would fit in a cabinet under the sink (see the photo to the right). We also made sure we optimized the island’s storage by installing cabinets the homeowners could easily access.

Additional Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

What are some other ways to use the area you have most effectively? As the National Kitchen and Bath Association advises, having limited space doesn’t mean you can’t make it look and feel more spacious with some big ideas. One big one is to use storage effectively (as we did in the Los Gatos project). They also recommend using a mixture of natural and ambient lighting. “A skylight will open the ceiling to more light and raise a portion of the ceiling, visually expanding the space…Natural light should be complemented by ambient and task lighting to provide the same feeling during the night.”

HGTV also recommends using a natural hue for the entire room. “This creates the appearance of a fluid and balanced space that allows the eye to continue to move around the entire space.” When you think about which colors you want to add, remember “cooler colors, like blues, tend to recede and make a space appear bigger. Warm colors, like deep reds, tend to close in a space and make it feel more intimate.” They also recommend using a few touches on the ceiling and floor to add vertical depth. “Keep the floor in your design aesthetic by adding a rug or floor covering to provide texture and color. Add dimension to the ceiling with lighting. Besides adding style and personality, it will draw the eye up.”
