Kitchen Space Saver: The Lazy Susan

When you think of “Lazy Susan,” an image of a rotating tray piled with food in the center of your kitchen table probably comes to mind. But did you know these handy kitchen accessories can be found tucked away as well? A convenient space saver, the Lazy Susan is a fantastic way to make the most of the corner area in your kitchen cabinets during a remodel.

Adding a Lazy Susan During Your Remodel

A remodel is the perfect time to invest in a Lazy Susan, especially if you feel like it’s hard to use every square inch of your kitchen cabinets. The ultimate space saver, these kitchen accessories allow you to store your mixing bowls, pots, pans, small appliances and more in a place where they’re out of the way yet easy to access. All you need to do is spin the base until you find the item you need.

Choosing the Perfect Lazy Susan

What criteria should you consider when selecting one of these handy kitchen accessories? Here are a few tips from eHow:

  • Measure the space you have available. Generally this convenient space saver needs a corner base cabinet that measures 33-36 inches deep and wide from the back corner along the wall in each direction.

  • Choose the type of Lazy Susan that will fit into the space. There is a wide variety of brands and styles to choose from. We recently installed a pie-cut wood Lazy Susan from DeWils in our Los Gatos remodeling project. Other varieties include a half-moon, D-shaped and full-circle.

  • As you select which of these kitchen accessories you want to add during your remodel, think about the shape of the door opening. “If you have a 90-degree opening, the pie-cut shape is the best bet…If you have a diagonal, you can select the full-circle or ‘D’ shape…the swing-out half-moon Susan is reserved solely for the dreaded blind-corner cabinet.”

  • Select this space saver with your budget in mind. There’s a wide range of Lazy Susans available to homeowners. In addition to the design, these kitchen accessories are made from varying materials (including plastic, wood and chrome-plated metal), which affect the price as well.
